Obesity in the United States
Obesity is a health condition characterized by being overweight. This means that the victims experience an accumulation of a lot of fats on their bodies. In most instances it is considered to be a chronic disease just like diabetes. The condition is a serious epidemic in developed countries such as America. Indeed, half of the American is over weight and further a child in every five children is overweight. Obesity has severe implications on the economy (Levine & Hammond, 2010) that of interest to workers and businesses.
For this study different types of data will be relevant for this project. The data will include quantitative data and qualitative data. And will take an econometric approach. The sources for such data include periodicals, research articles and reports, published books, surveys and others. The use of multiple source helps ensure that there is adequate information for that study since no single source can capture or provide all the information necessary for an economical study. Definitely, these sources must have adequate information relating the influence of obesity on the economy.
The study shall only make use of literature concerned obesity and its bearing on the various economic aspects of people and businesses. Numerous studies have been conducted and have all indicated that obesity is very costly. About $45 billion is spending annually by American treating complications brought about by obesity (E-Medicine Health, 2010). These conditions include illness such as dyslipidemia, diabetes, hypertension, heart diseases, osteoarthritis, stroke, sleep apnea, gallbladder diseases, respiratory problems and sometimes cancer. Businesses also suffer as a result of obesity. It is estimated that businesses in America suffer $20 in terms of losses in their productivity every year since some employees fail to report to work on numerous occasions as a result of illnesses associated with obesity (National Conference of State Legislatures, 2010).
This study is definitely feasible. There is numerous data to meet the studies data needs and the sources are also varied. The project may require several day bet few student as few as one to conduct. The scope of the study will also be narrow since the study will mainly focus on how obesity influences or affects the economy.
