Self Reflection

Learning how to write is a mode commonly used by most writers to express their thoughts and feelings about something, describe situations in life and also respond to new information or event. In reflective writing, thinking and learning occurs simultaneously and there is no wrong or right way of thinking and writing but depends on the subject being explored (Mezirow, 2010). Reflective writing enables one to clarify and develop the relationship between what’s already studied and understood and what’s being learnt, between existing written materials and practice and also between what’s being done and how and why you do it.

The writing process starts with oneself thinking and identifying the subject in details before moving forward to assess the ideas and words to be used. This entails revisiting previous experience and current information one has on the topic being explored. It also involves considering how and why you think and want to write the way you do. Ones understanding and foundations in writing about a topic are determined by examination of his beliefs, attitudes, values and assumptions. Reflective writing demands one to understand that he provides valuable information to all experience and connection between what existed previously and what is being acquired in learning.


Over the semester, I have acquired crucial skill and also perfected the art of writing. Though setting up the assessment criteria for the writing in particular is quite difficult, I have managed to evaluate and compare my skills by involving my friends in checking and correcting my work. The process isn’t a question of how much a student writes; it is about the evidence of the degree of reflection as well as the insightfulness of their observations (Mezirow, 2010). My writing skills have enabled me to combine elements of field experience which develops the benchmark skills of observation and recording that effectively communicate to the reader. Through these skills, I can further improve the field skills and having learned and practiced in article writing; I can successfully apply and participate with confidence in article and editorial writing in daily magazine company.

In assessment criteria of the self reflective writing, the grade awarded depending on the assessor reflects in part or wholly how much one observe and the quality of thoughts that are manifested in each entry. Different assessors will be looking for different aspects in the writing and to achieve maximum score, one has to do it putting in mind all the writing basics of the article. Whether the writing is formal or not, one has to convince the reader that you have fully looked and exhausted the landscape and engaged with it and that you have confronted the issues raised in what you encounter seriously and pondered their implications.

Successful and qualified self reflective entails the ability to make connections.

The main purpose of reflective writing is understanding and have the capability to apply what you learn in an institution and build on your prior knowledge whether formal or informal. In examining ones learning processes, self-reflective writing requires one to consider and comment on the learning experiences, what you’ve learned and how you did so.  It’s also necessary to clarify what you are learning. Reflecting enables you to clarify what you have studied and integrate newly acquired knowledge with the previous one.

Reflecting on successes and mistakes can help one to avoid repeating them and embark on maximizing improvements sections. Also, reflecting more on your discoveries assist one identifies successful principles that can be used again (Mezirow, 2010). It also enables one become an active learner and also acquire the qualities of a reflective practitioner after successfully learning and completing the course according to the requirements.
