The correctional officers are involved in the maintenance of security within the prison facilities. Inmates are secluded from the normal situations in life. This situation arises because some of the inmates are dangerous to the society or some of them are using substances that are illegal in the society. The ideal way of managing such members of the society is therefore to isolate them from the normal societal environment that could prompt them to break the law. In such a circumstance, the correctional officer is supposed to safeguard prison facilities to ensure that there is no entry of contraband goods within the prison facilities. It is difficult for inmates to have an effective self-system because of diverse culture and personal orientation of the inmates. It therefore requires the input of neutral individuals so that there is some form of organization within the prison facilities. Investigation officers

Firstly, the role of police officers is the actual investigation into the alleged crime. This process involves identifying tangible evidence that would include collection of exhibits from the scene of crime through photographs or weapons used in committing the crime. Investigation will also involve recording statements from witnesses. Notably, investigation could happen before an arrest or after producing the suspect in court. Under, extreme cases, police officers would seek more time from the magistrate in order to complete their investigations. It is important for police officers to ensure that they respect sections of the constitution law when carrying out investigation and this includes the need for a search warrant.

Communication and collaboration

Publicly, police officers are the most identical units within the criminal justice system because they deal with the general public in the restoration of law and order. The police are significant in the criminal justice system since they influence the onset and the conclusion of a case within the criminal justice process. Firstly, the police are in charge of receiving and addressing complaints of a crime. Police stations have designated areas where crime is reported and documented. They identify the complainant and the suspect in the case.

Thirdly, police officers are involved in arresting criminals. After the police have received complaints, they will carry out investigations and arrest the suspected individuals. There are certain cases whereby the investigation might take longer because of the nature of complexity and it may require tracking systems so as to arrest the suspect. There are cases whereby the suspect is aware of his mistake and the police would need an arrest warrant for them to arrest the individual. The law has stipulations that guide the arrest process and the number of hours that a suspect should be held in the police custody after an arrest.

The role of the investigation officers places them at a central place in determining the success of the prosecution process. The prosecution process depends upon the evidence that the investigation officer provides to the authorities in the case. If the evidence is not substantial, the suspect would not serve a jail term. In such a case, the suspect could sue the state for wrongful detainment. Conversely, if the evidence is tangible then the suspect will be punished in relation to the corresponding terms of sentence.

Probation officers

Communication and collaboration

The probation officers interact with offenders. The main objective for this interaction is to create a platform for managing these offenders. They interact with offenders who are still serving jail terms in prison. This interaction is meant to evaluate the progress of the inmate in regard to rehabilitation from the former behavior. They also interact with those who have been released from prison on bond. The aim of interacting with released offenders is to protect the public from dangerous offenders such as rapists and child sexual molesters. Secondly, interaction with released offenders reduces the chances of reoffending.

Probation officers role is unique and controversial since it is not found in every criminal justice systems of every country. Their role places them at the central point within the criminal justice system because they have an active form of interaction with other branches. They work in conjunction with the police, the magistrates and the correctional officers. This interaction is enabled by their role of maintaining the regulations of community orders. A community order is executed in a situation where the offence is petty or the offender has made an official public apology over the committed offence.

Under this probation, the offender will engage in communal work or undergo a rehabilitation process in situations involving alcohol or drug abuse. This situation therefore means that the probation officer has to communicate with the police, court and correctional officers on this alternative form of sentence. They interact with magistrates through preparing pre-sentence reports for magistrates. They give their observations about the ability of the offender to serve sentence in jail or through community service.

Personal reflection on an appropriate career path

The criminal justice system has careers that require a lot of professionalism and ethics. This is tricky because most situations within the criminal justice system present individuals with the desire to be merciful towards offenders. Among these three branches, probation officers role is a situation where someone can express empathy to the offenders. The role of probation is not to punish the offender but to explore means through which the offender can become a normal member of the society. My decision to prefer being a probation officer is informed by the reason that there are offenders who commit a crime because of coincidences, unexpected emotional imbalance or due to change in environmental aspects. For example, it will be illogic to sentence a juvenile to jail because he stolen snacks when he is a forgotten orphan in the society.
