Supervision in the workplace
Leadership is a very important concept in defining the roles of different workers at workplace. It gives the person in charge of management to delegate duties and responsibilities to people based on their skills, experience and hard work. There are many cases around the globe concerning employees who cannot perform of their responsibilities in the absence of their bosses or without being supervised. Is a worker supposed to be supervised in order to deliver results as expected? A good supervisor has to act as an overseer mandated to ensure that those people working under him or her perform their duties and assigned production work at the correct time and within performance boundaries that have reasonable quality, safe and cost effective. A supervisor is responsible for what subordinates do at the place of work and therefore he/she has powers, duties and responsibilities that are related to that of the general manager (Duncan, 2006). Nevertheless, supervisors have no power to neither hire nor fire employees of any company and do not make budgetary decisions unless these responsibilities are delegated to them. This gives a distinct difference between a supervisor and a manager. Minus hiring and firing responsibilities clearly means that supervisors cannot recruit an employee or terminate his work. They are mostly involved in the hiring process in terms of interviews and assessing the best candidate to serve in a given position. The fact that a supervisor and the Human Resource manager have something which brings them together, one person’s failure can automatically lead to poor performance. They are therefore supposed to properly connect and cooperate in order to achieve set goals and objectives without straining.
As mentioned above, the role of a supervisor in any business, company or organization is very crucial, fundamental and irreplaceable. There is no doubt that no manager can perform the roles and responsibilities of a supervisor and simultaneously carry out his duties without inefficiency and risk of errors. It is however important to note that having a supervisor and experiencing good supervision at workplace are quite different and should never be considered to be the same. With high expectation from workers from workers all over the world, to work faster, harder and efficiently than before, supervisory services mean a lot. The kind of supervision accorded to workers of any business or company creates an atmosphere which directly affects their performance depending on its taste. Coping or buckling of workers depends on the supervision environment in which they carry out their daily activities.
The difference between a sick workforce and that which is vital and ready for the performance greatly depends on the manner in which supervision roles are undertaken in the company. Nevertheless, effective workplace is a necessary and sufficient requirement for better performance of any organization. Why is it that there is usually poor performance among workers in the presence of unfair workplace environment? Supervisors determine the working mood in any environment which may be full of tension and fear or freedom and peace. Working under tension does not help much. It has been found that many workers in poorly supervised workplaces are likely to be stressed up and unhappy throughout their working time (Poor Supervision).This automatically affects their efficiency, health and attitude towards work. Stressed workers fall sick more often and would prefer being at home most of the time than working. Many people who work in organizations with sick supervision spend most of their time thinking about bitter conversation and rebukes at which occur at work place rather than focusing on improving their performance.
Poor supervision may include but not limited to lack of appreciation, being harsh, being a poor listener and always seeing the negatives and weaknesses of subordinates without appreciating their strengths however minor they might be. This attitude and way of leading a team kills the opportunity for many workers to learn and polish up their skills. What supervisors need to understand is the fact that although training may only take place on day one of ones employment, learning of new skills is a lifetime and termination of it ushers in ignorance, the mother of mediocrity. Additionally, poor supervision opens the door for unethical practices among workers in any organization. The fact that workers’ efforts are not appreciated and exposure to ridicule, harsh treatment is a constant routine makes them feel disconnected from the company and may resort to unacceptable behavior like absenteeism and theft just but a few examples (Poor Supervision).
For any business to thrive and realize recommendable, admirable and exponential growth, good workplace supervision is mandatory. What then does it mean to be a good supervisor or conducive workplace supervision? A good supervisor should be approachable at any time of the day and ready to friendly respond to the needs to his/her subordinates however much they might be simple and appear simple (Duncan, 2006). A good supervisor also needs to ever present and ready to serve his juniors. What happens to workers who are expected to perform extra ordinarily yet the supervisor is ever absent? Such employees get plunged in the frustration ditch leading to inefficiency. A good supervisor has to be flexible and understanding in order to develop a working relationship with his juniors. It is not that supervisors will always agree with workers but they have to be assured that their concerns are being worked on. This gives them hope as part of the company hence increasing efficiency and productivity. Proper workplace supervision also entails supervisors being trustworthy and accountable of their words. As the immediate linkage between the management and workers, they ought to have up to date information regarding major events, change in company operations or changes in working hours. This ensures that there is rumor mongering within the working environment.
Supervision at workplace is indeed a very important of leadership and business management. It is important that a compatible working environment is created by supervisors to augment efficiency among employees and freedom. Good workplace supervision goes a step ahead to promote interpersonal relationship among employees regardless of their positions in the company.
