Colonialism and Imperialism
Colonialism this mainly refers to the history between the fifteenth and twentieth centaury where by people from the European countries established colonies in other countries. This can also be defined as the stronger countries like Europe exploiting the weaker ones in many different ways. Colonialism is mainly aimed at expanding power in the metropole, making profits in different ways, to escape persecution and to convert the indigenous society into the colonist religion. (Kaine and Nicola Camen 1995, 100 113)
The idea of Colonialism is to be used in a method of development of a country's possession of land, resources, and economic improvement. Some of the countries who were most active in setting up new colonies seemed to believe that it was their obligation to assist and bring less educated and poorer societies into their fold so they could teach them a new civilization and expand their horizons.
Some countries simply did it to get their hands on the material resources of the new country which are poor and have resources but due to one reason or the other they are not able to make maximum use of them. (Bilha 2003)
Imperialism, defined as the, formation and protection of an imbalanced economic, cultural and territorial relationship, usually between states and often in the form of an empire based on domination and subordination." Imperialism has been described as a primarily western concept that employs "expansionist, imperialism comes from the word imperare which is Latin meaning command, although this was done in the 16th century it is reflected as imperial polices of Britain, Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal and Spain. (Bilha 2003)
Imperialism is considered as the management by one state of other territories. Through political or military means which is known as direct imperialism, the imperial power may take over the government of a particular country, or through trade and industry processes which is well known as indirect imperialism, in which the concerned region is legitimately self-governing but associated to the imperial power by often unequal trade relations. Moreover, the concept of cultural imperialism is indicated by "existing or traditional ways of life and ways of thinking are subordinated to the culture of the imperialists.
The term and the meaning of imperialism should not be confused with colonialism analysts have put different meanings two this two great words, it is a matter of fact imperialism operates from the center and it is a state strategy and is developed for economic reasons as well as ideological purposes.
On the other hand colonialism is just the improvement for profitable intentions or settlements. Imperialism aimed at financial development by improving infrastructure owning richer empires where they take advantage of the resources the countries have and are not able to use them because of lack of improved technology.
Colonialism aimed at owning more land in the weaker countries although they still promoted development in the countries they colonized. Colonialism is there well known as the practice while imperialism is the idea driving the practice. In some cases colonialism is said to be more efficient because it has led to developments of different countries in many ways including better housing improved infrastructure building railways and better roads improvement of trade new and better farming methods and also helped in bringing civilization to the societies.
